Paris: People reading & smoking

Two things that I am no longer used to seeing on city streets in the US - people reading from books and people smoking.  I was struck in Paris by how many people were just hanging out outside on a bench reading books.  And smoking.  I never see people smoking any more.  And in Paris, on the streets, there was lots of reading... and smoking... and sometimes people doing both at the same time.
