NYC: Smog at night

Those orange-and-white towers you see on New York streets are temporary ventilation stacks, usually set up for subway, utility, or construction work beneath the street. They help move air in and out of underground spaces where crews are working. At night, they create a coat of smog that overhangs people walking on city streets.
