Texas: Bob Whites

The Northern Bobwhite is one of the most iconic birds of South Texas, named for its distinctive "bob-WHITE!" whistle that carries across fields and brush country. These small, round-bodied quail spend most of their time on the ground, moving through grasses and thornscrub in family groups called coveys.

In South Texas, bobwhites are closely tied to healthy ranchland habitat, where they feed on seeds, insects, and native plants. They're often heard long before they're seen.
