The Buff-bellied Hummingbird is one of South Texas’ signature birds — a tropical-looking hummingbird that reaches the northern edge of its range in the Rio Grande Valley. Unlike many hummingbirds that are just passing through, Buff-bellied Hummingbirds can be found in South Texas year-round, especially around dense brush, gardens, and flowering plants. They are larger and stockier than many other hummingbirds, with a distinctive buff-colored belly, olive-green back, and reddish bill.
