Texas: Ruby-throated hummingbirds

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is one of the most familiar hummingbirds in North America and a spectacular spring visitor to South Texas. In late April, many are passing through on their northward migration, stopping to refuel on nectar and tiny insects before continuing their journey. The below photos are females, which are more subtly colored with green backs and pale underparts. Despite weighing less than a nickel, these tiny travelers can fly hundreds of miles and return to the same breeding areas year after year.
