White-crowned sparrows are winter visitors to South Texas, recognizable by their crisp black-and-white striped head. They spend much of their time on the ground searching for seeds and are often seen around brushy edges and water. Despite their striking head pattern, they're otherwise fairly understated birds that blend easily into the landscape. Here is one having a bath - and looking very wet and rumped in South Texas.
