Desert cottontails are among the most common mammals in South Texas, though they're often hidden in the brush until one suddenly darts across a trail or road. Adapted to the region's heat and dry conditions, they spend much of the day under cover and emerge during cooler hours to feed. Their ability to remain perfectly still makes them easy to overlook despite being widespread.
