The Northern Cardinal in South Texas is the same species as the cardinal you see in the Northeast.
But, cardinals in South Texas can sometimes look a little different. Because the climate is warmer and the habitat is dominated by thornscrub and brush country, they can be slightly slimmer, brighter, or more intensely colored than some northern birds. There are also regional subspecies, but they're all Northern Cardinals.
