Montana Abandoned Towns: Maudlow

Our next stop on our tour of Montana abandoned towns is Maudlow, Montana, where there is this creepy abandoned school with a swing set.  Super creepy.

We drove through Maudlow on our way to Sixteen, Montana, which has a pretty legendary story of its slim population.  Unfortunately, the road between Maudlow and Sixteen had massive "private property" signs, that after having read the story of the town, we did not want to infringe on anyone's property.

Montana: Cattle Country

Montana is filled with wide open space!  That's why its called Big Sky Country.  Wide open space, which is great for cattle.  Driving through the middle of the enormous state, it can feel like there's more cattle than people in the wide open spaces.  At one point during our drive, the cattle refused to leave the road to let us pass and surrounded our car.  I guess it was more their land than ours - so we learned our role and turned around and had to detour another way.

Montana Abandoned Towns: Lennep

In our hunt for more abandoned towns, we drove to Lennep, Montana, to see the abandoned postal store and general store, below.

Montana Elevator Co

Driving to explore some of the abandoned towns of remote Montana, we drove past this old Montana Elevator Co building.  Elevator company?  My immediate thought was how is a building that makes elevators so small.  But, turns out elevator company means something else.... it means a wheat-farm cooperative for farmers.  This specific elevator company was built in 1904 and in Lewistown, Montana.

Montana: More Abandonment

Driving North from Billings, off the 287 highway, we found more abandoned buildings from a past era.

Montana: Abandonment

Below are photos of abandoned homes in Montana.  From Billings, we drove south, so south-central Montana, through a reservation, we found many abandoned homes and a school.  We drove through the Crowe Reservation on our way exploring off the beaten path Montana.
